Anglo Indians espouse the cause of environment
Having maintained a low profile ever since it came into being about 22
years ago, the Ooty chapter of the All India Anglo Indian Association on
Saturday occupied centre stage by espousing the cause of environment in
an effective manner.
Adopting the motto, ‘Let us lead by example', about 25
members of the association including a number of students from the
Ketti-based Laidlaw Memorial School and Junior College spruced up the
ambience of Kalhatty waterfalls near here.
Apart from removing the litter including plastic cups,
plates, bags and bottles thrown by insensitive tourists, the volunteers
even covered the graffiti on the view point by painting it.
Association president Charles Corfield, who led the campaign, told The Hindu
that the objective was to commemorate Gandhi Jayanthi and the Wildlife
Week Celebrations in a fitting manner and in the process sensitise the
people including tourists to the considerable harm being done to the
flora and fauna by non-biodegradable items.
Pointing out that such items which were thoughtlessly
discarded by careless visitors often led to the death of wild animals
including those on the endangered list, Mr.Corfield, who recently
retired from the Forest Department, said that the association would
organise similar campaigns periodically.
He expressed the confidence that if others followed
suit, “the environmental degradation which is taking place in this
popular vacation destination can be checked”.
